Essential Travel Tips for Your Journey with Experience Liberia

Accommodation in Liberia

Liberia offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different tastes and budgets—from modern hotels in Monrovia to guesthouses and eco-lodges in rural and coastal areas. Whether volunteering in a local village or exploring the city, you'll find comfortable places to stay. Hotels are generally equipped with essential amenities, and many include Wi-Fi, dining, and transport services.

Communication & Connectivity

Liberia has several telecommunications providers offering voice and internet services. Visitors can purchase a local SIM card at the airport or city with a valid passport or ID. Most urban areas have decent internet coverage, though rural regions may be more limited. Many hotels and cafés offer free Wi-Fi.

Getting to Liberia

International flights arrive at Roberts International Airport (RIA), located about 45 minutes outside Monrovia. Several airlines operate flights from Europe, West Africa, and the U.S. Upon arrival, airport staff can help you find transportation into the city.

Money & Payments

Liberia’s official currency is the Liberian Dollar (LRD). U.S. dollars are widely accepted in most parts of the country. Major hotels and businesses may accept Visa cards, but cash is preferred, especially in rural areas. Currency exchange is available at banks and licensed money exchangers.

Entertainment & Nightlife

Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, and other major cities offer vibrant nightlife with bars, live music, cultural centers, and seaside cafés. Visitors can also enjoy traditional dance performances, beach bonfires, and community events in local towns. Your host or hotel can help recommend places based on your interests.

What to Pack

Liberia has a tropical climate year-round: pack light, breathable clothing, comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunglasses. For volunteering, include casual outfits suitable for outdoor or community work. Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a rain jacket if visiting during the rainy season (May to October).

Visa & Travel Documents

All travelers require a valid passport. Visas are required for most nationalities except ECOWAS citizens. We recommend applying at your nearest Liberian embassy or consulate well in advance. Some travelers may qualify for a visa on arrival.

Health & Safety

Visitors should consult their doctor before travel for up-to-date vaccination information (yellow fever is mandatory). They should also bring any prescription medications they need and basic first-aid items. Liberia is generally safe, but it’s always wise to be cautious with personal belongings and follow local advice.
